Probation

If you are charged with a crime, sometimes a judge will decide that you do not have to go to jail, but will put you on probation. If you are on probation, you will need to follow certain rules to stay out of jail.

You will be assigned a probation officer in your community. The probation officer's job is to make sure that you are following the judge's orders. For example, if you are supposed to stay home at night, your probation officer will check to make sure that you are there.

If you break the terms of your probation order, you can be charged with breach of probation and could be imprisoned.

The probation offices are managed by the Corrections Service division.
