Legal Division
The Department of Justice's Legal Division is a full-service law firm, providing legal advice and services to all government departments and specified public agencies of the GNWT.
Legal Division lawyers provide advice and services in a variety of areas:
Constitutional issues, including the application of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms;
Aboriginal consultation issues and land claim/self-government negotiations;
Civil and constitutional litigation in a wide variety of matters, which entails representing the GNWT before all levels of court;
Regulatory and administrative law matters before various administrative boards and tribunals;
Environmental, natural resources and regulatory compliance;
Real estate and corporate/commercial matters;
Contracts, agreements and MOU’s (reviewing and drafting);
Procurement matters (RFP’s and Tenders); and
The collective bargaining process, grievances and arbitrations.
Legal Division is also responsible for the prosecution of territorial offences.
