Corrections Northern Recruitment Training Program

The Corrections Northern Recruitment Training Program or CNRTP provides the training that you will need to be considered for a position as a Corrections Officer in one of the NWT's four correctional facilities.

Training positions are limited. Successful candidates are paid for eight weeks of training consisting of six week classroom training followed by 14 shifts in a Corrections facility where candidates will have the opportunity to job shadow a Corrections Officer in their duties. NOTE: Because shift work is involved, the physical amount of time that a candidate needs to be available is spread over nine weeks.

To be considered for the training, participants need to have the following qualifications and pass an interview process:

• grade 12 or equivalency
• satisfactory criminal records check
• satisfactory medical assessment
• valid class 5 driver's licence and able to obtain a class 4 driver's licence within four months of hire
• valid standard first aid and CPR certification or able to qualify for certification before course completion date.

The training consists of 240 hours of classroom and administrative instruction, including living-unit management, defensive tactics, conflict intervention and crisis management, and standards for use of force. Participants are required to take part in a program of physical exercises designed to teach defensive tactic techniques. Training hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday.
