Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) Acts
Several provinces and Yukon have Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) Acts. The NWT does not currently have this type of legislation.
SCAN legislation would people a new way to keep their communities safer. Public safety investigators would investigate complaints about:
- Drug use, dealing or associated activities
- Prostitution
- Bootlegging
- Use of non-potable intoxicating substances (like Lysol or hairspray)
- Gaming
If this law was passed, people who were disturbing their neighbours this way could be evicted from the property. An investigator could also work with the residents of the property to find another way to stop the activities without an eviction order.
This law would only apply to activities that have a negative effect on the community and are ongoing, not those that only happen occasionally.
