Legal Division
Legal Division is the government's full service law firm providing legal advice and representation to all government departments and specified public agencies in matters of civil law. It does not provide direct services to the public.
The division is responsible for providing civil legal advice, opinions and services to the Government of the Northwest Territories and specified public agencies, including:
- constitutional issues including the application of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms;
- providing legal advice and support to government negotiators and officials in self-government negotiations, aboriginal land claims and treaty entitlement, including the implementation of concluded land claims agreements;
- conducting civil and constitutional litigation, which entails representing the government in cases before the Territorial Court, Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, Provincial Court, Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada, and administrative boards and tribunals, in a wide variety of matters;
- Advising on, reviewing, and when prudent and necessary, drafting contracts and agreements for government departments and specified public agencies;
- the government's liability which may result from government programs and services.
