Parenting After Separation

“Parenting After Separation” is a workshop that helps make the transition through separation or divorce easier for both children and parents.  The workshops are presented regularly and focus on the difficult issues that arise during and after separation or divorce.

In certain situations, you may have to prove that you have taken the workshop before you can apply for court orders in your case. At the end of the day, you will get a certificate that shows that you have finished the course.

The workshop will help you to plan life for you and your children after separation or divorce.  The course focuses on the changing family; dealing with separation and loss; methods of effective communication; legal issues such as custody, access and child support; and planning for your new situation.  Exercises and discussions will help you with the emotional and logistical aspects of helping children through separation or divorce.

Emotions are often hard to deal with. The workshop helps you and your children to deal with emotions in a productive way.  Separation and loss can have a serious effect on you and your children, so a number of exercises and suggestions will allow you to work through the stages of loss in a way that works best for your family.  These exercises help you to identify and deal with emotions in your children that may result from the separation.

Living apart is a big change, and most people have questions about the transition. You’ll need to work out a visitation schedule for children, family support payments, how rules will be enforced between households, and many other things.  This workshop helps you plan for these things.  Although you have likely given consideration to many of these already, the workshop may help you recognize some areas you hadn’t previously thought of.

Both parents and children will benefit from the information.  Separation or divorce is a difficult time for families, but this workshop will help you to deal with the challenges in a productive, positive manner.

NOTE: Participants only need to attend one session. The workshop is held in Yellowknife, but will be held in other communities according to demand.
