Family Mediation Program
Mediation is an alternative to court. It offers a cooperative approach to solving legal problems. The Family Mediation program is a free service that can help parents who are separating or divorcing to agree about:
- where their children will live
- visitation
- how they will continue to be good parents
- family support
Posters and brochures can be read or printed directly from your computer:

Mediation is not for everyone. Mediation may not result in a settlement that is meaningful if there is a power imbalance between the parties. It is not usually appropriate where there has been abuse, and it may not work in situations where one (or both) of the parties is unprepared to compromise. That said, many people enter the process with very entrenched positions and still reach a compromise.

This website is not intended to give you legal advice on your particular problem. For legal advice, please consult a lawyer. A lawyer-referral service is available through the Law Society of the NWT.
