Amendments to the Residential Tenancies Act
The Residential Tenancies Act of the Northwest
Territories was first enacted in 1987 and was modeled on
legislation in effect across the country. It has been amended
over the years on a piece meal basis. Similar legislation
continues to be in force in all Provinces and Territories.
The Residential Tenancies Act regulates the relationship between residential landlords and tenants. The Act strikes a balance between the interests of tenants and landlords. It also provides for the resolution of disputes between landlords and tenants by a rental officer, and gives him or her the authority to make orders on certain matters, including the termination of tenancy agreements.
Consultations were
conducted in 2005 and the Department has prepared a draft bill.
