Community Justice: Accessing Funding
The Community Justice Division (CJD) was established in 1993 to help communities build their capacity to address their own justice issues. The primary vehicle for this activity is through Community Justice Committees. The CJD has made available funding for each community to access for the establishment and programming of their own Community Justice Committee. As well as the program funding, there are also salary dollars available for the hiring of a part-time Justice Committee Coordinator.
In order for a community to access these funds, they must:
- Access the Community Justice Coordinator dollars. For this, the sponsoring organization needs to submit a letter of interest in this funding which states their commitment to apply the funding to the salary dollars for a part-time Justice Committee Coordinator. This may be someone who has a full-time position in the community, but who is committed to a portion of time coordinating the activity of the Justice Committee, or the Crime Prevention/Restorative Justice programming in the community.
- Determine a goal or objective for the committee for that fiscal year. For example, in a community without an established Justice Committee, the goal for that year would be to establish a committee, and to raise the Community Justice Committee profile in that community.
- Prepare a workplan which lays out the activity plan for the year. The sample workplan lays out some of the options your community has to address its justice issues that the Community Justice Division will support. These activities are to be planned to help achieve the goal or objective of the Committee. For example, if the goal is to establish a Justice Committee in your community, your activity would include volunteer recruiting, Community Justice Committee information workshops, open houses, Committee office set up, etc.
- Draft a budget based around your program allocation, and your workplan activity. For example, using the previous examples, a budget could look like this:
Budget $5,000
Expenditures
Admin (10%) $ 500
Open House $1000
Posters, Advertising $ 300
Volunteer recruiting $ 500
CJC Workshop $1000
CJC Handbook training $ 500
Youth meeting $ 600
Adult meeting $ 600
TOTAL $5,000
